The Hubbery Cafe and Bakery

The Hubbery is a prominent part of Spithurst Hub. It has changed and developed over the years and at present it is a weekly micro bakery and a seasonal pop up cafe as well as the constantly beating heart of our co-working space and meeting venue.

We love the Swedish concept of fika and drawing from The Hubbery founder’s heritage we offer Swedish themed home cooked food, home made bread and home baked buns and cakes to our local community, to our cafe guests, to our co-workers and to our meeting room users.

More recently we have started to develop our own range of homemade energy bars and protein bars to go with our new wellbeing and fitness focus and we look forward to sharing these with you as we move forwards…

The Hubbery Bakery

We bake to order here most Fridays in small batches and with much love, care and attention to detail. Our authentic Swedish cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla buns are popular treats and our slow proved triangular bread is flavoured with caraway seeds and fennel and without any additives of course. You can also order our chocolate cake well known from the So Sussex Picnic at Elderflower Fields Festival. Everything we bake is suitable for home freezing on the day of purchase… if you can make it last that long!

Simply place your order at the Hubbery Bakery online shop by 16.00 on Thursdays and pick up your freshly baked produce on Friday afternoons between 13.00 and 17.30. Upcoming Hubbery Bakery Fridays: 7th, 21st and 28th November. You can also purchase our frozen buns at Barcombe Village Shop or enjoy them warmed up at the lovely Denniker Cafe 🙂

Seasonal Pop Up Hubbery Cafes in 2025

We will be opening up our outdoor cafe for lunch and fika the following weekends in 2025 so save the dates!

  • 8th and 9th March 2025 –  Soup and Semla Pop Up Hubbery Cafe
  • 26th and 27th April 2025 – Spring Pop Up Hubbery Cafe
  • 14th and 15th June 2025 – Summer Pop Up Hubbery Cafe
  • 13th and 14th September 2025 – Autumn Pop Up Hubbery Cafe
  • 6th and 7th December 2025 – Winter Pop Up Hubbery Cafe

We aim to run a series of Hubbery Pop Up Events in 2026 too so watch this space for dates and more information!

All our seating is outdoors and there are a limited number of tables under cover. Booking ahead is essential for lunch and don’t leave it too late as we quickly get fully booked, particularly during our core lunch hours. Just email us at [email protected] to book your table.

Private groups are most welcome to get in touch with us to book The Hubbery at other times for gatherings and celebrations indoors or outdoors during weekdays or weekends (subject to minimum spend).

Our Hubbery food and fika is also available to anyone booking our Spithurst Hub meeting space – The Rosehip Room.

Fika is the Swedish word for stopping what you’re doing, having a break and enjoying a drink and a homemade treat together with your family, your friends or your colleagues. It’s a hugely important part of Swedish culture and it is a concept that is difficult to fully explain or translate properly… you just have to visit us to experience it!

The Hubbery has been running for Spithurst Hub members and local businesses since we opened Spithurst Hub in 2017. In the middle of the pandemic, after the first lockdown, we decided to also open The Hubbery Cafe to the public during weekends and this venture flourished for two and half years. It became an enjoyable outdoor meeting place for lots of people having Swedish fika together during a difficult time.

Many thanks to all the lovely guests who supported our initial Hubbery Cafe venture and huge thanks to all the amazing young people (29 in total!) who worked with us and who helped us create The Hubbery Cafe in the first place! It was a pleasure to share so many lovely fika moments with you all in the middle of the pandemic!
