Spithurst Hub was envisioned and developed by Nigel and Maria Greenwood in 2016 to enable their growing, family run So Sussex venture to move away from their home environment and the many meetings around their kitchen table. During this process it became evident that there was a need for more professional work spaces for other local individuals and organisations who also had a desire to be based in the countryside. This realisation sparked the idea to create a rural co-working space that could be shared with others in our community.
Spithurst Hub has become a reality thanks to lots of hard work from the So Sussex team, support from funding bodies such as LEADER, LOCASE and ESi4 and a shared vision with Nick and Harriet Lear who agreed to partner in the project and to provide the land.
Spithurst Hub has been designed to be adaptable and flexible to meet the diverse needs of local businesses. It embodies the So Sussex ideals of facilitating working both indoors and outdoors, with a strong emphasis on enabling a positive work-life balance.
Whilst the original design was developed by the So Sussex team, much of the final building is the result of collaboration with Shaun Sizen and the DFC build team and our good friends at Perssons Träteknik in Sweden. We also worked with many local professionals, including Ben Bosence from Local Work Studio , who contributed the unique rendering, and Sara Ekstrand Garden Design, who designed our bee and butterfly friendly gardens. We also received significant assistance with electrics and IT from Mark Greenwood at Galaxy Technical Solutions.
Spithurst Hub opened its doors in November 2017 and was quickly filled with interesting people. We truly love sharing our space with others and we are delighted to see such a diverse range of individuals and organisations benefiting from the hard work that went into creating this space. In 2018 we were honoured to receive the “Business in the Community” award at the Lewes District Business Award Ceremony.
